Services

Are you looking for a specialist counsellor for your child?

I’m Tracey and I specialise in working with children and young people (CYP). I also train other counsellors to become CYP counsellors, and I offer supervision to qualified CYP counsellors to help them maintain the highest possible standards, and to be the best counsellors they can be.

Children and young people face many difficulties and pressures in their lives, such as bullying, abuse, trauma, family issues, mental health problems, and more.  I really enjoy helping children and young people make sense of their world and better deal with whatever challenges they are facing.

I’m a former teacher and I work as a school’s counsellor in various schools in Hull.  I have also worked hard to help establish a charity to support children and young people, who have experienced trauma, where I am the Lead therapist and Designated Safeguarding Lead. As well as these activities, I run my own private practice offering face-to-face or online therapy for CYP.

I use a range of approaches and techniques to suit the needs and preferences of each client. These include play therapy, art therapy and Transactional Analysis. All of my sessions are client-led (person-centred) which means that the child or young person is free to talk about what they want to talk about. All sessions are, of course, completely confidential, although safeguarding concerns are shared.

There are enormous benefits of counselling and psychotherapy (or simply therapy) for children and young people, and some of these include:

  • Enabling CYPs cope with difficult emotions they are struggling with, such as anger, sadness, fear, or guilt. Therapy provides a safe and supportive space, allowing CYPs to express and process their feelings, and teaching them effective coping strategies or emotional regulation skills.
  • Improving CYP’s self-esteem, confidence, and resilience, by helping them identify and challenge negative thoughts and beliefs about themselves. Therapy encourages them to recognise and appreciate their strengths and achievements, and empowers them to overcome challenges and setbacks.
  • Enhancing CYP’s communication and social skills, and their relationships with family, friends, and peers. This is done by helping them develop empathy, assertiveness, and conflict resolution skills. Therapy helps facilitate positive interactions and feedback, and helps address any issues or difficulties that may arise in their interpersonal dynamics.
  • Supporting CYP’s academic performance, motivation, and creativity. This is done by helping them set realistic and attainable goals, by providing them with guidance and feedback, by enhancing their concentration and memory skills, and by stimulating their curiosity and imagination.
  • Fostering CYP’s personal growth, development, and well-being. Children and young people can be helped and encouraged to explore their identity, values, and interests, to promote their autonomy and independence, and enhance their physical and mental health, ultimately supporting their happiness and wellbeing.
